Effects of Gold Rush

The Gold Rush caught the attention of immigrants, which led them to travel to California. It was this large arrival of Chinese and Mexican immigrants who were looking for gold that left a significant impact on California. The immigrants decided to stay and build a life for themselves and their families. These immigrants brought with them a sense of hard work, duty, and service that turned California from areas of tent settlements, to the towns and cities that created a state. It was these values immigrants passed to their children that still survive into the modern age. The most lasting, significant influence of the Gold Rush on modern California were the immigrants, whose hard work, desire to build community, and diverse cultures created the California dream.

People who are hard working will discover that they will be rewarded. “Businessmen prepared their cargoes; those who had little sold all for what it would bring in order to make the trip; those who had nothing either paid their passage by serving as sailors or pledged themselves to work on contract in exchange for the price of the trip to El Dorado.” (MacLowry & Longsworth, 2006). For example, the PBS documentary “The Gold Rush” describes how the hardworking immigrants would sell everything they had and work on the ship or as servants to pay their way to California just for the gold rush. Many of the men left their homes, farms, and businesses for the Gold Rush. “Later, Coronel watched one man dig up an amazing 52 pounds of gold in just eight days.” (MacLowry & Longsworth, 2006). The gold diggers were easily able to dig a successful large amount of gold within a few days due to their hard work.

The California gold rush influenced the growth of communities. “Many of the forty-niners organized themselves into joint-stock companies — the Perseverance Mining Company, the Old Harvard Company, the Wolverine Rangers — and pooled their resources to buy supplies for the long journey to California.” (MacLowry & Longsworth, 2006). The forty-niners had a strong sense of community and cooperation with each other and everyone helped each other out during the Gold Rush. “They formed very coherent communities in places like Chinatown in San Francisco, but equivalents even in the mining camps.”(MacLowry & Longsworth, 2006). The people were good at organizing communities and this helped secure the interests or cultures in the state. For example, new roads were built. A lot had to be done to make it possible to have so many new people which lead the growth that the Gold Rush caused in California.

The Gold Rush brought many more diverse cultures to California. “Some 90,000 gold seekers rushed into California over the course of 1849, roughly three quarters of them from the United States” (MacLowry & Longsworth, 2006). Among these 90,000 people there were people from all over. While most of the newly-arrived were Americans, the Gold Rush attracted tens of thousands from Latin America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Each of these countries brought their own culture. The people from Latin America brought in the Hispanic culture with all of it’s spicy foods and Latin dances. All of these people brought with them their different cultures that still exist today. California was known to be the most diverse culture in the world. “Ever since the first American miners had arrived in California, they had been trying to expel foreigners from the gold fields” (MacLowry & Longsworth, 2006). There were some discriminations against the foreigners because people were invading the land of California which belongs to the Americans.

Hard working immigrants from all over the world traveled to California because they see many opportunities. People who decided to stay found jobs on farms and other work. According to Pai Yang, a Hmong refugee and a community activist, a lot of them did not have education or work skills or work experience, but they’re very good at farming (Quay, 2005). Immigrants hoped to come to California, so they could find an opportunity to farm and move into their new homes. Farm worker were paid low wages and were often treated unfairly, and many had to work hard in poor conditions. Many of these farm workers who came to work were Mexicans and Laotians. They still managed to survive and spend their money wisely while they raised their children. Parents were able to send their children to schools. Most people did not get rich from the Gold Rush, instead they learned the value of hard work and getting an education. Uri Herscher points out that “there are disappointments, how we deal with them will take hard work” (Quay, 2005, p. 213). However, today there are more competitions for job opportunities than the Gold Rush days because people had to work extra hard when there were less jobs available during this bad economy when people are being laid off.

Many new immigrants formed communities and it was a matter of race, lang

Open Question: Have you heard any of these Military Jokes?
Giving very odd excuses
The General went out to find that none of his G.I.s were there. One finally ran up, panting heavily.

“Sorry, sir! I can explain, you see I had a date and it ran a little late. I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but it broke down, found a farm, bought a horse but it dropped dead, ran 10 miles, and now I’m here.”

The General was very skeptical about this explanation but at least he was here so he let the G.I. go. Moments later, eight more G.I.s came up to the general panting, he asked them why they were late.

“Sorry, sir! I had a date and it ran a little late, I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but it broke down, found a farm, bought a horse but it dropped dead, ran 10 miles, and now I’m here.”

The General eyed them, feeling very skeptical but since he let the first guy go, he let them go, too. A ninth G.I. jogged up to the General, panting heavily.

“Sorry, sir! I had a date and it ran a little late, I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but…”

“Let me guess,” the General interrupted, “it broke down.”

“No,” said the G.I., “there were so many dead horses in the road, it took forever to get around them.”

Change your course now
This is the transcript of an actual radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995.

Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations on November 10, 1995.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES’ ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS, AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, THAT’S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

Practical joke on his ex-girlfriend
The soldier serving in Hong Kong was annoyed and upset when his girl wrote breaking off their engagement and asking for her photograph back.

He went out and collected from his friends all the unwanted photographs of women that he could find, bundled them all together and sent them back with a note saying, “I regret to inform you that I cannot remember which one is you — please keep your photo and return the others.”

Indian chief’s signal
An Indian chief is driving his Cadillac somewhere at Nevada. Suddenly his car gets broken. He examines it, and reveals that a technician must be called. But the chief has only $4, and no credit card (unfortunately B-) ). So he gathers some wood, makes a fire and signals his tribe with its smoke: “Hey, send somebody to my location with $500!” The tribe accepts this signal, but to make sure in its meaning, signals back – once again, with the smoke:

“OK, chief, but why so much ?”

At this moment a ground test of nuclear bomb is being held on the test field nearby. A huge mushroom-like cloud of smoke rises into the sky… The tribe signals:

“Ok, Ok, chief, we just wondered, why to be so angry?
