Resolved Question: How can an insurance company add my wife to my motorcycle insurance when she cannot legally drive the bike?
For the past 4 years I have been paying around $85 / year for my motorcycle insurance. I had an accident with my Truck in Nov.07 but that did not effect my new rate last year (well it went up about 5 bucks). A few months ago I received a letter from Arrowhead Insurance here in New York who took over NOVA in 2006/2007. They said that I must add my sister and wife. When I called and discussed that my sister lives in the upstairs apartment they allowed her not to be added, but said my wife must be listed as a “rated driver”. I explained that she cannot legally drive the motorcycle (no license, only an auto license) but they said they had issues in the past with that. After argueing for awhile, I decided that it probably wouldn’t hurt the price too much anyway and let it go. I received my renewal notice last week and it went up 3X MY NORMAL RATE!!! I’m just wondering how they can get away with this, wouldnt’ the case be that if my wife did drive the vehicle illegally the company would be protected from any liability anyway?

I live in new york, and don’t have a car and don’t have car insurance, I am thinking to rent a car for a cross country trip should I purchase rental car Supplemental Liability Insurance? or it only work when you have an primary auto policy. For the car collison I have american express they charge me 15 dollars for 50k coverage for up to 30 days rental, what I mostly worry is the liability for medical and for other party. Thank you.
